Coming soon: A new sub-referencing feature – try it!

Hello. For many years, community members have requested an easy way to re-use references with different details. Now, a MediaWiki solution is coming: The new sub-referencing feature will work for wikitext and Visual Editor and will enhance the existing reference system. You can continue to use different ways of referencing, but you will probably encounter sub-references in articles written by other users. More information on the project page.

We want your feedback to make sure this feature works well for you:

• Please try the current state of development on beta wiki and let us know what you think.
• Sign up here to get updates and/or invites to participate in user research activities.

Wikimedia Deutschland’s Technical Wishes team is planning to bring this feature to Wikimedia wikis later this year. We will reach out to creators/maintainers of tools and templates related to references beforehand.

I am pleased to announce the following individual as regional members of the U4C, who will fulfill a term until 15 June 2026:

The following seats were not filled during this special election:

• Central and East Europe (CEE)

Celtic Knot 2024 ja viikon mittainen muokkaustapahtuma verkossa 21.–29. syyskuuta 2024

Preliminary results of the 2024 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees elections

Hello all,

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2024 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election. Close to 6000 community members from more than 180 wiki projects have voted.

The following four candidates were the most voted:

1. Christel Steigenberger
2. Maciej Artur Nadzikiewicz
3. Victoria Doronina
4. Lorenzo Losa

While these candidates have been ranked through the vote, they still need to be appointed to the Board of Trustees. They need to pass a successful background check and meet the qualifications outlined in the Bylaws. New trustees will be appointed at the next Board meeting in December 2024.

'Wikidata item' link is moving, finally.

Hello everyone, I previously wrote on the 27th September to advise that the Wikidata item sitelink will change places in the sidebar menu, moving from the General section into the In Other Projects section. The scheduled rollout date of 04.10.2024 was delayed due to a necessary request for Mobile/MinervaNeue skin. I am happy to inform that the global rollout can now proceed and will occur later today, 22.10.2024 at 15:00 UTC-2. Please let us know if you notice any problems or bugs after this change. Aasian kuukausi marraskuussa 2024

Suomenkielinen Wikipedia osallistuu jälleen marraskuussa 2024 Wikipedian Aasian kuukauteen. Se on monikielinen muokkauskilpailu, jolla pyritään kehittämään Aasian tuntemusta Wikipedia-yhteisöissä. Tarkoituksena on parantaa Aasian maihin ja alueisiin liittyvien artikkelien määrää ja laatua. Kilpailu järjestettiin ensimmäisen kerran vuonna 2015, ja suomenkielinen Wikipedia on ollut mukana vuodesta 2018.

Kilpailun säännöt lyhyesti: Luo marraskuussa 2024 uusia Aasiaan liittyviä artikkeleita (ihmiset, paikat, kulttuuri jne.), jotka ovat pituudeltaan vähintään 3 000 tavua (byte) ja 300 sanaa. Artikkeleissa tulee olla lähteet. Luetteloita ei lasketa mukaan kilpailuun. Myös olemassa olevien artikkelien laajentaminen lasketaan mukaan kilpailuun, kunhan niitä laajennetaan vähintään 3 000 tavulla (byte) ja 300 sanalla.

Aasian Wikimedia-yhteisöjen ystävyyden symbolina kukin osallistuja, joka luo tai laajentaa ainakin neljä kilpailun sääntöjen mukaista artikkelia, saa käyttäjäsivulleen erityisesti tätä tapahtumaa varten suunnitellun barnstar-tähtipalkinnon. Eniten artikkeleita Wikipedian kussakin kieliversiossa luoneet ja täydentäneet wikipedistit saavat myös arvonimen ”Wikipedian Aasian suurlähettiläs”.

Looking for Wikipedians from southwest Finland to organize a workshop together

Hei, moi, terve! I would love to organize a workshop around local cultural heritage sites in Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons (Wiki Loves Monuments) in Kemiö island next year (Feb. and Sept.). I am not from the region, therefore I would like to do it together with someone from there (or at least from Finland, hehe). I described the idea as a Wikiproject here and I would be very happy to find people here who want to help me realizing it!

We will also have members from the Wayuunaiki community joining us to share their experiences with the Incubator and as a new community within our movement. This meeting will have a Spanish interpretation.

Wikimedia Suomi ry:n syyskokous pidetään sunnuntaina 15.12.2024 Helsingissä Maria 01:ssä, os. Lapinlahdenkatu 16, rakennus 3, kerros 2, Urban 3 -tilassa. Kokoukseen on etäosallistumismahdollisuus Google Meetissä. (linkki tulee kokouskutsuun ennen kokousta) Kokous alkaa klo 14.00. Kokous ja muu ohjelma avoimia kaikille.

Syyskokouksessa esitellään toimintasuunnitelma ja talousarvio, päätetään jäsenmaksusta sekä valitaan hallitus ja puheenjohtaja vuodelle 2025. Lisäksi kokouksessa käydään läpi miten yhdistyksen strategia on edennyt ja tarvittaessa päivitetään strategiaa. Kokoukseen on mahdollisuus osallistua myös etänä. Kokouksen jälkeen on esitelmä Wikimedia Foundationin Wiki Mentor Africa -ohjelmasta ja yleistä keskustelua.
